"Now that we have our henna paste ready in a bottle for application, we're going to practice a little bit on paper and just make some straight lines making sure not to actually touch the paper with the metal tip, or eventually with the skin, but just raising it a little bit above, squeezing it, and letting the paste flow out. You'll find that if you lift the applicator up, you can almost drape the straight line so that it makes a straighter line and it easier to lay down the artwork. You'll find that you'll get more proficient with doing that and that the lines become more even. Now that you have the straight line down, you can practice shading techniques on the side of the line by using the tip again of the applicator and just sort of lightly brushing a little bit of the paste out and letting a little bit more out with a very light squeeze, just to give it a little bit of a shaded effect. This is where the stick also comes in handy. You can use the pointed end to just draw a little bit of the henna and just sort of smear it very lightly to give it a shaded effect. This comes about very nice when the henna dries on the finished design."
