This is a back piece that we have been working on. It has a Japanese style theme but it is done in a more modern way. Coy fish in the middle is kind of a common thing that you will see in Japanese style tattoos. It’s the coy fish itself is symbolic of a variety of different things but ultimately the traditional coy tattoo has to do with the Daoist myth where the coy travels up a magical stream to the heavens, learning lessons about his existence and the nature of existence along the way, and every animal that he comes in contact with, he obtains an attribute of physical characteristic from each animal. So as he ascends up the stream by the time he gets to the heavens, he becomes a dragon. That is why they have the body of a snake and the claws of an eagle, mane of a lion, horns of a stag; all the different animals that he came in contact with. They are commonly depicted with this ferocious look but it is really supposed to be a look of ecstasy as he achieved enlightenment. "
