"Traditionally henna is done on the hands and on the feet. Right now I’m going to talk to you a little about henna application on the foot. One of the most important things to try and remember about applying henna to the feet is that in the back there’s going to be an area where the skin is very bent. You need to be careful when you’re applying your henna that you think about what you’re going to do when you get to the back of the foot or to the back of the ankle area. Otherwise you will make an intricate design back there that will frequently end up messed up because the person flexes their foot. So have the person you’re doing henna on sit their foot on something like a stool that they can stay on. Some designs that are frequently used on the foot are similar to these. This design is really nice because it incorporates a really lovely fall design on the heel which would be very striking as the person walked. If you notice there’s frequently nothing on the bottom of your foot, on the sole of your foot. While the soles of your feet would stain far better than the tops of your feet because the skin is thicker there, no one would be able to see it. So usually when henna is done on the foot it’s done on the top of the foot and not the bottom of it. Unless you live somewhere where the climate is very dry and you frequently go barefoot. Then henna usually would be applied to the soles of the foot as a protective measure. And that not in a design so much as the foot is actually dipped in henna paste. Some other lovely designs on the feet are this one. And look at the toes, if you notice it’s a very simple, delicate design on the toes. You don’t want to crowd your design. It’s very important to obtain balance when you are constructing your henna design. When you have a lot of business up here you don’t want to continue that down to your toes. You want your toes to look very little and dainty. In this design there’s nothing on the toes at all, but if you notice there’s a lot of very elaborate work in here. These designs are also used for the feet. This one is one of my favorites. I love this element right here. Something that’s kind of interesting is that you can take different elements from a foot design and incorporate into a hand design if you want. This design is so beautiful; it would frequently be used on a bride’s foot. This would take quite awhile to do although it’s not as difficult as it appears and look at it as little bites as opposed to the whole. If you look at the whole you may feel overwhelmed, “oh I can’t do it”. But if you look at something small like just this little teardrop shape here and begin here you’ll notice that you can do it. This design is very simple and it’s not extremely elaborate it’s a bit more modern in nature. You’ll frequently see young women walking around with something similar like this on their foot when they go to festivals and have henna done. It’s a very modernized American-type design. As are these. Sometimes the only thing you can call them are designs, you can’t say exactly what it is. It’s not a flower; it’s not anything that you can put your hand on. But that doesn’t make it any less beautiful. Try it. "
