Series Summary

Irons and other machines used to smooth fabrics have been used for centuries, beginning in China in the 1st century B.C. There have been many designs for irons since then, including cast iron slabs heated in fire or with coal, liquid fuel irons and electric irons. Most irons work in a similar fashion, by using heat, pressure and steam to remove wrinkles or form creases in clothes. Ironing is typically performed on an ironing board, which is a heat resistant folding table.

In this free video series, our expert will teach you how to iron a jacket. Learn each step-by-step instruction for ironing jackets with expert tips on determining the material of your jacket, ironing the collar, ironing in sections and ironing the sleeves. Get advice on how to iron jacket seams and backs, and using ironing accessories. If you need to iron that jacket for an important meeting or interview, let our expert give you the tips you need to succeed.

Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Marti on behalf of Expert Village. I'm going to show you how to iron a jacket today. This happens to be one of my favorites jackets I would wear almost everyday throughout the fall season. However it ends up in the chair or the back seat of my car frequently. So I think I'll give it a little touch up. First thing you always want to do is check your fabric this one happens to be Ryon polyester with a lines. Which means it can not handle a lot of heat another thing about my jacket is it has a grain to it almost like a corduroy. So I need to be careful not to crush that as well when I'm ironing it. There is a specific order you should try to maintain while you're ironing structured clothing. A jacket certainly qualifies because of all the construction that goes into it. Also to get on hand is a flower sack or a cotton cloth light weight but something that will help to protect the top of your fabrics while your ironing. It will help prevent it from scorching or shining."
