Sewing is an ancient craft that still has remarkable relevance in today's modern world. The art of stitching and assembling pieces of fabric together either by hand or with the use of a modern sewing machine is still a valuable skill and can be used for industry, home, or artistic purposes. Industrial sewing is usually done with the use of machines, but for seamstresses, alteration givers, and most casual sewers, an old fashioned needle and thread is still incredibly useful and more often than not the desired method since it enables far more detail. Tailoring and dressmaking require not only a needle and thread, but also other tools and materials that you can find easily at arts and crafts stores. Sometimes we grow tired of the same old clothes, and although they may still fit, we just need a change. In this free video series, you'll see how to turn a pair of jeans into bell bottoms with simple instructions. From picking the fabric to cutting, measuring, and attaching gore inserts, you'll learn every step on the way to making a new pair of bell bottom jeans! With a little bit of sewing, hemming, and patchwork, you'll be on your way to making all kinds of clothing alterations. Forget about being bored with your wardrobe, and follow these video instructions and techniques!
"Hi, I'm Melina Piroso and welcome to Expert Village. In this series we're gonna talk about turning regular boring old jeans into funky bell bottoms. In this clip I'm gonna tell you about picking the right jeans to turn into bell bottoms. Now, if you?re familiar with the bell bottom shape of jeans, it is tight in the leg area and then it flares out at the bottom. So for this project you want to make sure you select jeans that are a little bit tight in the thigh and butt area. If you pick jeans that are too baggy, when you add the bell bottom as we're gonna do, you're not gonna end up with a bell bottom shape your gonna end up with big wide leg pants that teenagers might like to wear but you might not like to wear. So what you want to make sure you do is try on some jeans and make sure that they fit you a little bit snug around the hips and waist area."

on 1/1/2009 This was a great series. Thanks, Melina! The only thing I had a problem with was a "tuck" at the top of the insert point... but that was easy to resolve, thanks to the tip in this video about the tight leg fit needed for the flare of the bell-bottom to look right.... I just continued a "dart" up the leg at the seam line to tighten the jeans through the thigh. Worked great! My husband wore the bell-bottoms to a 70s New Years Eve costume party along with a muslin tunic with batik neck trim I made fashioned after an old 70s tunic I had packed away. I wore my black cotton tunic and a tie-dye peasant skirt I made from another set of instructions found on the internet... topped both outfits off with headbands and John Lennon sunglasses.
