Leather & Bondage in Punk Style

"So what we're going to talk about now are two really interesting trends that exemplify sort of what punk is all about. The first one is leather. We talked about the leather coat, but the whole idea of leather is that it wasn't a fashion item really used in the 70s and 80s this way. If it was leather it was suede, or it was only put on shoes. And this was really supposed to be very transgressive at the time, very dissimilar to what other people were wearing. It was supposed to be harsh; it was supposed to be in your face. And so leather is really the basis of any sort of great punk thing. I mentioned before that a customized leather jacket is really what you wanted to be wearing. The shoes should be leather, and it should be worn. It's kind of supposed to be like a second skin. And so the leather also ties in with another trend, which is bondage in punk. Now, bondage gear is typically worn I sort of sex shop places where you're doing sort of an S."
