"Now I'm going to talk a little bit about the trends that make up the preppy style, because there are several of them. First is the use of color. Pink and Kelly green are probably the two main colors that are associated with preppy fashion. A sort of salmon pink like this matched with a preppy gearing is very, very common. And in general you want to steer towards bright colors when you're doing preppy fashion, but sort of bright pastels. This salmon is another really good color example. A nice light blue like this. You want bright, bold colors, but not so much bright patterns. And it really stays sort of within those, a bright yellow would work, a lavender, you don't see as much red but it is there. Another key theme is nautical, nautical trends or nautical themes that run throughout it. As I pointed out before, we have the bandanna with the anchors, the sweatshirt that I'm wearing has rope accents which are a nautical reference. In addition, patterns involving sailboats, any sort of nautical stripes. This is a reference to the class where prep came from, which is like an elite New England class that would go on yachts, they would sail a lot, they would belong to country clubs. Another key thing is that if you were doing a pattern you would want it to be something like this, sort of a simple graphic pattern, not too ornate, within the color boundaries that we talked about, and on a very classically shaped skirt."
