"Hi! I'm Karen for Expert Village. Now there is too much fabric here. If we hemmed this at this point, it will be very heavy. There is too much fabric here. So an 1 1/2 is a good amount of fabric and even for a skirt 2 inches of fabric would be okay. So we are going to cut away the excess to about 2 inches and just cut that away. You can remove your pins at this point because you have a crease here and you won't lose where you are hemming to and just keep rotating the skirt around and trimming off if you need to measure. You can put your gage there and cut to your gage. Oops, my pad keeps falling off the ironing board. Put your gage there to measure. I'm pretty good at eying a measurement and keeping it straight. If you feel like you can't eye it well, you can pre-measure it and mark it with a marking pencil all the way around and then do your cutting. Okay we will discard this excess fabric, removing the pins and next we need to finish the edge. Now if you have a serger and over wrap machine, then you could finish the edge just by sewing an edge there or if we are using a straight stitch machine, just simply fold in about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch; fold it in and press. Now if you like, you can go around and pin that amount all the way around; a 1/4 inch to 3/8's just fold it under and place the pin and that will hold it for you while you are pressing and continue around.
