"Hi! I'm Karen for Expert Village. Now I am going to show you how to prepare a skirt for hemming. First have the person try on the skirt and pin it to the length that you want. This was pinned mostly all around but not all around. So then turn the skirt inside out and place it on your ironing board, like this so that you can see the amount to be hemmed. Now this was pinned. I am going to measure with the gage how wide it was pinned and then I am going to make sure that it was pinned the same all around. This is a little bit bigger than here. I am going to make it match all the way around because this is already a hemmed skirt. We are just shortening it. So we have 4 inches and we are going to pin that, measure with your gage. The gage is nice because it has a little mechanism to hold your place you don't forget what you were measuring and just roll the skirt around and measure and pin once it is in the right position and continue all around the skirt, measuring and pinning. Okay now we've gone all the way around. We will press a crease where we've pinned it. Okay use a steam iron that helps to get a nice crease and then roll it forward. Make sure it is flat and there aren't puckers and again, steam. You want to be careful. If you have a delicate fabric, you can use another piece of fabric over it. I'll show you later and that will protect your delicate fabric. Press it all the way around making sure the part you are folding up is laying nice and flat. Okay just one more section. Okay."
