"Hi! I'm Karen for Expert Village. Now I am going to show you how to hand sew a button onto a sweater. We are going to sew on to this blue sweater and the first thing you want to do is get the right button placement. So button up the garment with whatever buttons you do have and then we are going to mark where the button is going to go. How you do this is choose a marker, this is like a colored pencil where they sell special sewing markers also. It is basically like a colored pencil and for dark fabric you are going to use a light color and for a light fabric you would use a darker color. So line this up exactly the way you would like it to be when it is buttoned and then you put the marker right through the button hole and give it a good twist and then you can see where the button will be placed. Actually, that is good. Also here on the bottom, we have the same thing. Close the garment to where you would want it. Place the pencil into the center of the button hole and give it a good twist to mark it. Now we are going to move this button down to here because we are going to put the heart button on top. So first I am going to remove this button. A seam ripper is a good thing to use if you are going to remove a button. If you were going to replace all the old buttons with new buttons, you would have to remove the buttons and this is how you would do it. Take a seam ripper and you just catch it underneath the threads and push and that will come out and you will pull out any extra threads. The stubborn ones you will cut away. There you go. "
