"The next thing I wanna talk about is doing an opening number at your local pageant. When you do an opening number, you wanna limit it to just you know a couple of minutes, few minutes, don’t make it too long or drag it out so that the audience doesn’t get bored and you wanna keep their interest any way. You wanna choose energetic, fun music for the opening number, something that really gets the crowd going and gets the contestants excited about being there. So make sure you choose a cute song, sometimes oldies are good like Sugar Pie Honey Bunch or Shout. Some of Ray Charles music like Hit the Road Jack, there's just all kinds of things that you can use but just make sure you keep it upbeat. Also remind the contestants that they should always smile and keep eye contact with the crowd or with the judges, that's very important to keep up with their confidence level. Finally it’s important to allow the contestants to incorporate a unique style by wearing accessories. I would encourage sunglasses. Now you wanna make sure that the sunglasses are not too darkly tinted so they can still see where they're going onstage. And also you know, say it’s a western thing, you can wear cowboy hat or I have a cute cowboy purse here and you know, there is a few sparkles on it, so you know just allow the contestants to be creative and to express their own personalities through that."
