For centuries haircuts have been a distinctive form of class separation and self-expression. From the white wigs of the British political elite in the 17th and 18th centuries to the mo hawk wearing teenagers of today the way we wear and style our hair says a lot to people around us. Both men and women also have their typical styles. Depending on the culture it can be used to determine social status or to even make a cultural statement. Changing our hairstyle can drastically change the way we look as an individual or as a society.

In this series of video clips you will learn the important steps of cutting hair from preparation to completion and the different cut options that can be used in several different styles. You will learn the importance of parting and several helpful tips to make sure the cut you give is even and well balanced. These steps will walk you step by step through thinning, volume, using scissors and shears and cutting with a razor and explain the uses and benefits for each as well as ways to improve your skills as a hairdresser.

Today we’re going to be going over tips and techniques for cutting hair one of the first implements we’re going to use is called a razor and this we use for thinning bulk at the regrowth area and also on the ends to create separation and sometimes you can also use this for removing hair on the neck area. These are my notching shears this removes bulk and creates a different kind of separation and this is your traditional thinning shear for thinning and also our regular scissors that we’re going to use for all kinds of different things."
