Series Summary

Did you know ancient Egyptians practiced depilating (shaving or cutting off the hair at the skin) their entire bodies in attempts to prevent infestations of lice and fleas? Requirements for shaving or cutting the hair are part of many religious and cultural traditions. In America and the West, deliberate hair removal has become more common for aesthetic, sexual, or political reasons. Shaping eyebrows is not a new practice but has surely become more widespread in North America and Europe in recent decades. Females, especially, are expected to shape their eyebrows into lines or arches, gracefully crafting the hairs to appear more attractive to the male gaze. Many women find such cultural norms to be oppressive and evidence of patriarchal sexual politics. Because of this, some women shave their heads or refuse to shave or sculpt body hair in efforts to resist the expectations of society.

In this free video series Derek Berlin shows you the important steps of how to shape eyebrows. He lets you take a free peek at his work, giving you advice on sculpting eyebrows or preparing for treatment. Derek explains different types of hair removal, the importance of cleansing the eyebrow, and effects of eyebrow shaping. He also reminds you to keep your client happy and always be responsive. This is definitely a series worth viewing if you are thinking about getting professional treatment or feel like starting a practice of your own!

Video Transcript

"Hello, I'm Derek Berlin with Veronyka's Haircolor and Spa Salon. We're standing here in the aesthetic division, demonstrating how we shape a brow. This is all on behalf of Expertvillage. We hope you enjoy this segment. When working in brows, when working on brows, one must decide the shape of the face. Oval faces, square faces, triangular faces, all play an important dynamic in how we shape a brow. Most people when they do their brows tend to make them too thin. A lot of people don't realize that when removing your brows by shaving or over-plucking, you can actually damage the hair follicle to where the browline will never be the same or perhaps will never return. So please be conservative in the removal of your hair on the browline, because it may not come back. The best way to always do this if you're not sure, consult an expert. There are many fine aestheticians and beauty consultants which can guide you how to shape and realign your brows to compliment your best face. "
