Matching Stripes with Shirts & Ties

"Oh hi, I'm Douglas Willot on behalf of Expert Village and today we're going to talk about coordinating your shirt with your tie. Stripes can change the rules a little bit for coordinating your tie. There's a big rule for stripes and that is, if you're going to wear a striped tie with a striped shirt make sure the stripes you have on the tie are a different size than the stripes on the shirt. Especially the connecting color stripes, that's where it becomes most important. Here, the connecting color, and by that I mean the color that's going to coordinate it to your shirt, either through matching it or through providing a pleasant contrast. For right now we have a hue of pink in here that will go with the lavender, but these stripes are very thick and they're very different stripes. They're not just a straight color, so it stands out and helps coordinate this tie to this striped shirt. Over here on the blue side we have these blue stripes coming through and these stripes right here are very thin but these stripes come through as very thick so it helps a little bit with this tie inparticular. Of course, if you want to go for a basic single color what you do is step away from the striped shirt, look at the shirt and say "what color do I see most"? In this case the blue pops out at me first and in this case the lavender pops out at me first and I think I need to coordinate to that color specifically. So here I like a darker blue tie to go with the lighter blue stripes or perhaps these stripes, these blues are going to stand out in a nice way. Though in this case, this pattern is too close to the stripe pattern on the shirt. Over here, again what's going to go with the lavender, we've got a nice lavendar tie right there that's going to stand out nice. It's a darker color purple I should say. Or additionally, you can just go ahead and toss on the dark tie on the striped shirt. It stands out really really well."
