Series Summary

The necktie, or tie, is a long piece of cloth worn around the neck. It lays under the collar of a dress shirt and is knotted in front of the throat. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie descended from the 17th century cravat. Men and women wear neckties as part of regular office attire, formal wear, or going out on the town. Neckties are also worn as part of a uniform, and variations include the bow tie, ascot tie, bola tie, and the clip-on tie.

There are so many kinds and styles of ties today, with an endless number of colors and patterns. Thus, finding the right tie to match with the right shirt can be the difference between fashion success and faux pas. In this free video series, our expert will show you how to match striped ties, knitted ties, and ties with all kinds of patterns with different kinds of dress shirts. Whether you're wearing black and white or colors, you'll learn how to buy a tie for the style and occasion.

"Oh hi, I'm Douglas Willott on behalf of Expert Village and today we are going to talk about coordinating your shirt with your tie. The first thing to keep in mind when you are coordinating your tie with your shirt is what is the occasion. What is it that you are trying to communicate? What sort of dress are you there with? Is it a formal dress? In that case, you are going to want something more traditional. Probably like a black tie on a solid base color. Also if it is maybe a work scenario where you want to stand out a little bit more but still look professional think about maybe a red tie or a orange tie. Maybe with some sort of nice settled pattern that up close looks really interesting but from far away it stills looks like a nice big piece of color against your dress shirt. Maybe it is a night out and you want to pop out and stand out from the crowd. Well as long as your shirt is going to stand out, there is nothing wrong with clashing the tie a little bit so people are going to notice the tie. After all you would not wear a shirt like this to not be seen. So why wear a tie that is not going to be seen either. So as long as you know what your occasion is, you can be sure that you are going to grab both the appropriate shirt and the tie to go with it. That is very important first step. "
