Hot stone massage is a Swedish style of massage in which heated, round or oval stones, usually smooth basalt stones, of varying sizes and weights are placed on the body to treat sore muscles. The stones are heated in water and then laid out over key muscle groups, like along the spine or between the toes for example, offering a soothing and relaxing healing experience. Though intense, hot stone massage is gentler than deep tissue or therapeutic massage, but has many of the same benefits.
In this series of free video clips you’ll learn what to expect when getting a hot stone massage. Expert massage therapist Cherie Krieger explains the basics of hot stone massage and offers advice on how to prepare for your treatment. She demonstrates how and where the stones are placed for the various muscle groups and parts of the body, including the neck, back and legs, and offers tips on caring for the body after this relaxing treatment.
" Hello, I am Sherry Krieger, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, we are here to present hot stone massage today. Hot stone massage is the placement of stones in various places on the client’s body. Larger stones go on the larger areas, such as the shoulders and the hips. The smaller stones go up and down the spine in various other places, such as the hands and the feet. Hot stone massage is a very relaxing, soothing deep heat massage that actually penetrates your client’s body and really helps to relax the muscles and helps us, as massage therapists, to be able to get deeper into the muscles. Hot stone massage can be done in a different variety of ways. Today we are going to demonstrate basically just on the back. We are going to discuss the placement, as I said before, and how to work with the back and then start working on different parts of the body as the heat from the stones settle into the back."
