That elusive blend of volume, smoothness and style has created frustration in many women who seek to express their personalities and creativity through their locks. In fact, hair styles often represent the cultural, social and ethnic identity for many individuals and can also represent a certain social status. While hair density, texture and length are all factors in a persons hairstyle, fashion trends tend to play the biggest role in women's hairstyles.

In this free video series, our expert hairstylist will teach you how to create women's hairstyles. You will get easy to follow steps for cutting women's hair with a variety of techniques, including blunt cutting the back and sides, creating texture with thinning scissors, and cutting side swept bangs. You will also get tips on what tools to use for different women's hairstyles and how to hold the hair and your hands when cutting women's hair.

"Hi I'm Chris Faircloth, artistic director and co-owner of salon Teez. For expert village this is how to trim a woman's hair. These are the tools that we'll be using to trim the hair. We have a tight duck-billed type of clip. These are a little shorter but they can hold the hair tighter and can hold alot more hair. Then these type of clips are used for sectioning smaller sections and they will hold the hair very clean so we can see the sections that we're cutting. Or if you prefer it you can use a regular clamp type of clip. This clip will typically hold the hair or gather the hair in a big group, but won't hold the hair quiet as tightly as these other types of clips, but that's up to your discretion. We'll also be using a pair of offset handle scissors as well as thinning shears or blending shears. We have a pair of shears that are a little bit shorter and these are for a little more detail type of work. As well as our different types of combs. We have a typical cutting comb where the teeth are wide on one side and fine on the other. The fine teeth of the comb actually help us create our sections very very smooth with alot of tension where this is more used for sectioning or for a looser type of combing. A typical sectioning comb is one where the teeth are actually even except for at the very point where we have a little bit wider gap where we can carve around the ear or really get into a little more detailed type of areas. As well as a water bottle to keep the hair damp. We're not necessarily looking for the hair to be soaking wet. We just want to dampen the ends or dampen the hair so that we get nice smooth clean sections as well as being able to see the hair that we're cutting properly."
