Summary: Part 1 in this Learn tips on how to make knots for a handmade beaded hemp necklace in this free video guide to making unique, handcrafted jewelry.
"Hi, my name is Amy Kline, I'm here on behalf of Expert Village to show you how to create hem jewelry. Now that we've talked about cutting the hem to the desired length we're going to start with our first knot. So this is our join strand, it's going be the strand in the middle. So now we're going to cut ourselves our working strands and I'm going to do this in a smaller fashion just to create a sample piece. So obviously your working strands would be about 3 to 4 yards long if you're making a necklace. So, now that we have drone strands and our working strands. I for the purpose of teaching this and clarity right now I'm going to use 2 different colors of hemp just to make the knots clearer. So, instead of just using the one hemp and folding it in half I'm going to use 2 different colors and fold them in half and these become my working strands. This is also a really nice idea if you want to make something that looks a little different with the 2 different colors. So we have our working strands fold it in half, our drone strands fold it in half, we put them together and we tie and overhand knot to create our loop at the beginning. Just stick it right through like you're tying a shoe and you have your loop at the top that will become your fastener, your enclosure. So, to start with our first knot which is going to be our half knot, I like to secure it to a clipboard. You have your knot here ready to go. You take the shorter strands which are your drone strands in the middle and then you have your working strands on the outer edges. So that's how you want to start."
