Summary: Every braid begins with a clean part. Learn how to part your hair before braiding in this free hairstyle video about how to prepare hair for braiding.
"Right now, we're getting ready to part the hair for our first braid. This is very important, because it's going to set the tone for your whole head. Have them tilt their head over to the side just so you can see better. Don't strain yourself too much, otherwise you'll be very tired by the end. We're going to do a small braid, not too large. I like to make it balanced with the head. This is where her eye ends and so I'm going to start parting right here. Begin your parts with a wide tooth comb. Just to make sure that the hair doesn't get caught up and too tangled in a smaller one. Then you can take your smaller combs to hold the hair up so you don't lose your place. Then just keep parting and you can go straight to the back if you want to do some intricate style. What I like to do for the outside was to just go along the hair line. Just kind of curve it. Let's see. If you don't get it right the first time, that's fine, I generally go back multiple times to make sure I get the part just where I want it. I have to hold the hair back first. See, it's a little bit crooked, but I just wanted to get down in there so I could see what I was doing. You can grab small amounts and just pull out. You put the comb to hold the hair back right there. There we go, we have our first part. Generally the hair at the end will be thinner than it was at the start. Just because it all kind of comes together, so it?ll thin out towards the bottom anyway. Then you want to comb it out just a little bit. Then get a finer tooth comb and start to comb it out. Then we are just about ready for our first braid."
