Series Summary

Of all the many nations on the Earth, China is one of the oldest and most important. They’ve had a long and illustrious history, with famous dynasties, kingdoms and empires, spanning eons of time. Today, China boasts the largest national population on the planet, with over 1.3 billion inhabitants—and it is currently ranked the fourth largest country in terms of total land area. Naturally then, a country so large is bound to have branches that extend throughout the lineage of mankind, from East to West.

The Chinese also have one of the oldest forms of writing, known as calligraphy. This system comprises a complex series of lines, dots and characters that make up the Chinese alphabet. This pictographic language also employs compound character forms that signify entire words, phrases, and concepts.

In these free Chinese language lessons, expert Xi Chen will show you how to write and pronounce words for home furnishing items and accessories—such as lighting, pillows, rugs, etc.—that you would find around the house. She walks you through the formation of each character and explains each aspect in the process. With a goldmine of etymological background and important detail for each part of the symbols described in these lessons, these videos are an invaluable resource for the serious Chinese language student!

"This is part two of Chinese words for home supplies. In this part I am going to teach you more Chinese words about home supplies. But we have all ready talked about different pieces of furniture in the previous series, so in this part we are not going to cover that. Also, I am not going to talk about electrical appliances. For electrical appliances names you can refer to the relevant series. In this part I am going to teach you more Chinese words about home supplies we have in the bedroom and living room. Lets start with light. Deng. Ok, this is a general word for different kinds of lights. And you can see that the left part is the fire radical. And fire radical comes from the word fire, which is pronounced as huo in Chinese. And when it becomes a radical, you need to pay attention to the last, the last stroke here. It turns from a very long right falling to just a long dot. So that it becomes just a radical like. And the right part, deng, deng and deng, sound similar, so we use this part as the pronunciation part. Deng. This is for light."
