"This is an example of dictation. Get out a regular sheet of paper and I ask the child to tell me what they would like to write. So if the child says "I love my cat", I write it. "I l-o-v-e, love, m-y, my, c-a-t, cat." Then I have them... they can take this piece of paper, they can draw a picture on here, or they can also write more to the story. But the very first step is the teacher will write what the child says, and the next step is they have the child write it themselves. Usually when we get to the point where the child is writing it themselves, we have lines to lineate is so that they know exactly where to stay in the lines. The child says "I love my cat. He is great." And I give it to the child and have them finish the story or write the illustrations. Often before we start I would write the child's name."
