"Now something I want to throw at you at this point when we're talking about humor is I want you to recognize the difficulty in using humor primarily getting a laugh. Now I've already talked about some people are funny (just naturally) and some of you aren't. The rest of us fall in the middle somewhere. But I want you to recognize that humor and laughter is not something that's always going to come very easily. So what you want to do , especially if you're planning humor in your speech, is practice it on people. Make your mother, make your father, make your husband, make your wife, make your children, make your dog (no not your dog), make your brother, your neighbors. Whoever it is, have them watch you utilize humor and let them tell you if you're funny or not. I can pretty much guarantee if all of them laugh, you're probably funny. If none of them laugh, you may want to consider the humor. Now some of them may be giving you a little courtesy laugh, but they will be able to tell you whether it's funny whether the humor works in that particular speech."
