"Now the next two compliance-gaining strategies that I want to talk about, I'm going to put them together. They are called promise and threat and these are many times used in the child raising department. The first one is the promise: if you do this for me, if you give me what I want, I promise I will do X, Y, Z, whatever it is that you're going to promise. If you buy me a dog, I promise I'll feed it, I'll walk it, I'll take good care of it. The opposite of that is the threat, and the threat is, if you don't do this, this is what's going to happen. If you don't give me a divorce, you will never see your children again. It's an action-reaction kind of thing. One of them just happens to be more positive, one of them happens to be more negative. But I'm promising you, I'm threatening you. Both are tactics for me to get what I want, which is a divorce or a dog."
