Counting Dimes & Nickels for First Grade Math

"After learning count by nickels and pennies the next thing we go to is dimes. but we don't put all three together cause that is to much as once. Instead we just focus on dimes and nickels cause that is the next progress but it only one step higher its a little bit easier. So let's go to our dimes which are counted by tens and our nickels which are counted by fives. Start and again I put the biggest one in the beginning. We are not going to mix them up just yet, that will come later. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, stop. Now a new coin. We are switching. We were counting by tens and now we are counting by fives. We just had forty. The next five after forty is forty-five, fifty, fifty-five. And then have them write it in. We are going to start moving away from giving them the sign. Let them write their own sign, rather it's a dollar sign or the cent sign. And again ten, twenty, stop. Twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five. Once again with any worksheet you can reverse it. Make them do more of the work of drawing the coins. Here is fifty-five cents. Show to me in coins. Alright here goes your youngster and there is fifty-five cents, good job"
