"Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village, and we'll be looking at how to teach a child to read using big books and read alouds. Book talk, part two. We went back into the book and we picked out about the four seasons. We chose to look at that as a book talk because it worked for us but there were many points you could have used as a book talk that looked at the pictures. Now in our book talk, we're going to look at the concept. We may ask a question as simple as what did you think of the little girl character? What did you think of the little boy character? Would you have helped the way he did? You're responding to the story now. So we responded to the pictures by looking at the seasons. Now we're going to respond a little bit to the story. We want to hear the child's response about the characters. Another question you may say is what type of animals do you think they are and are they real animals or are they cartoons? Use your imagination. As the child sees that you're using your imagination and you're thinking about different aspects of the book, so will they. Never never avoid doing a book talk. Summarize it. Find something in the picture, something in the text you can talk about and what meaning it may have. Book talks, always finish on one."
