"Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village. We'll be looking at how to teach a child to read using big books and read alouds. Read alouds non fiction books "My Five Senses", what do you know about senses. Remember the KWL charts, nothing mommy. What do you want to learn? I don't care. Well let's learn about the five senses and how important they are. First we look at the table of contents in a book. It will tell the various five senses because remember on a book aloud we still have to open the book and turn the page. Well the first page is a picture of children. One girl is saying "I have two eyes, nose, a mouth, two ears and two hands", let's make this a read aloud. Can we try it? Do you have two eyes? Yes, what do you do with the eyes? I see with them. Do you have two ears? Yes, what do you do with your ears. I hear with them. You see the technique when you get into books that are teaching children remember even parts of their body they are not sure what it is for. This helps these kind of small techniques which you pause and go ahead and you would explain. With my eyes I see myself, my shadow let's try that. Let's look in the mirror and see if we see ourselves. A lot of your non fiction books that explain to children different parts of the body and different things there's wonderful opportunities to take it to the next step and to try it with your child."
