Series Summary

Reading is an essential part of learning. It has always been a significant sign of how well a child is able to learn. With that said, there are still thousands of people in the United States alone, including children, that are not able to read. Reading can be informational, personal, rewarding and technical. It is one of the most important ways we communicate as human beings. In this world of endless signs and written instructional information, it is very important to be able to read what is going on around you and for us to teach our children the importance of, not only reading, but reading well.

One common and effective way of teaching children how to read is by reading aloud to them. With this technique, children are able to match the words they see with the sounds coming out of someone's mouth, and thus can make associations. In this free video series, our expert will show you how to read aloud to children, starting with fun openings and ending with fun activities to make reading more enjoyable for kids. You'll learn the importance of reading with a purpose, how to teach kids about non-fiction books, and most importantly, how to read aloud to children so that they will learn the most. After you start reading aloud to children, you'll be amazed at how soon they start reading on their own!

Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village. We'll be looking at how to teach a child to read using big books and read a loud. The first thing to teach a child to read is without a textbook. You start with the fun game. I like using something as simple as I spy. I may say to my child I spy something purple in your room, I'll give them some hints it's very very large. It's larger than my hands, go out it's soft and I can see just a little bit of it, can you find what I spy in your room. The child may look around then say it's my blanket, "yes it's your blanket" simple fun games that I'm not using a textbook. Can I use a textbook before I initially start reading? Yes, I can do something simple as let's play a quick little game as I spy a cardinal can you find the cardinal. You're teaching the child to read pictures, you're showing a word. The most important thing is begin every time you read to your child a short simple little fun game, a rhyme, poem and I spy anything that is short simple and fun."
