"Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village and we'll be looking at correcting common reading problems in children. We're going to be looking at a lot of strategies that you can use to overcome young readers common problems. One of the common problems that young readers have is they insert words or invent text. As they've first learned to read, they make up words and a way to look to watch to see it is make sure as they're reading you're kind of reading with them, you're seeing what they're reading. If they start inventing words or inventing text, tell them first let's try reading it with your finger or give them the magic finger that we have used before. Tell them to lift up the pencil or lift up their finger from word to word, that way they will see the spaces and you're making them focus so that they don't insert words or invent text. And then you can ask them, did that match? For example; if you had a simple book like The 3 Little Pigs, and they invented a word; as I like sticks and they invented that and you're saying, what you read in the text, did that match the picture? It makes them think. A lot of times what happens they will invent words and text because they haven't slowed down and they're not reading with their finger. Also these techniques promote voice to print match which is important. As an example; The first little pig builds a house a out of straw. Mr. Wolf is watching him. So insert words or invents text, make sure to look to see if your child is doing this. First common problem."
