Chinese Zodiac signs are based on the Chinese calender, which comes from astronomy and ancient Chinese philosophy. In the Chinese zodiac there are no corresponding constellations like in the occidental zodiac, but instead, the signs operate on a cycle of months or “moons” and hours of the day. Chinese zodiac signs work on a 60 year cycle based on the five elements( wood, fire, earth, metal and water) , their yin and yang form and the ten heavenly stems. Each sign in the Chinese zodiac corresponds to certain character traits and personality types.

"Hi, This is Nandita Pandey on behalf of Expert Village and we're talking about Feng Shui. When we talk about Feng Shui, one important thing that comes to mind is the Chinese Zodiac signs. What are they? And how are they different from the rest of the western calendar? Now the Chinese Zodiac system is actually the certain 12 animals which are assigned to these Zodiac cycles and they are used for dating the years. This can be a little different from the solar cycle that we follow on the western calendar. Because the Chinese calendar follows the lunar system, wherein, the cycles of the moon are taken into consideration. And as the moon changes the whole calendar is based upon, and the cycles, like every 12 years there is a different animal which falls in. And according to the characteristics of the animal that year falls in. Even now, 1911, Chinese did adopt the solar calendar, but even now when a calendar is made, the Chinese do follow their own lunar system to actually calculate the festivities that they have to follow in their own country."
