"Alright now let's talk about if you are going to be away from your desk for extended periods of time, or even possibly short periods of time, if you do a lot of phone business. There's nothing worse than people trying to get a hold of you and they get your message machine. And they leave you message after message after message and they have no clue what's going on. It is imperative that you put a forwarding message on your phone message. Either that or a detailed message about when you will return and who can help them. Forward it straight to the operator and tell people on the message. Hey, this is Tracy, I'm going to be out of the office. Today is March eighteenth and I will return on Friday, the date and the time. In the meanwhile I'm going to have all my calls forwarded to Bob in accounting, who will be able to help you. You can leave a message or you can set up an automatic transfer. But let your customers know how to get the help they need when you are not available."
