"I'm Jamal Spencer for Expert Village, here at ABC 3 here in Lansing, and we're going to talk about how to be a successful sports broadcaster. This clip is about covering national sports. Now you're running with the big dogs now. When you do national, you're going to see some faces that you grew up watching. You're going see some faces that you turn on in the morning and they're there. That's when it's the most important to act professional. But covering national sports is as good as it gets, folks. Outside of covering the Olympics, which very few people get to do, covering national sports is as good as it's going to get. You get to cover NBA, NFL, NHL, professional soccer, if that's your thing. Whatever you want. Nascar, PGA Tour. Covering professional sports means you get to talk to the biggest names in that sport and ask them what's going on. You get to ask them about that game, their career, what happened in their personal life. You know, so and so, did this off the court, off the field, let's ask about it. It's the biggest deal. But it's also the most fun you're going to have, because, I am not going lie. They take care of you very well. They set you up in the press box, they give you free food, they pass out stuff to you, you get papers and information on the teams, you know what high school they went to, their mother's maiden name. You know everything about these guys because they provide it you at the national level. They have people working for you in the PR department, public relations department that provide you with everything you need to know. But that's a big market, folks. National sports allows you to work in a top ten market such as Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, LA, New York, Miami. These are places that have multiple professional sports teams. So if you're in the area, it's great to network and say, "Hey, I'm in college, I'm in high school, I just got into this professional business." because these people want to help you too. So when you're at a professional meet or a national sports meet, you see a journalist, smile, shake their hand, introduce yourself, because you never know who could help you at national events."
