Hello, my name is Doctor Susan Jewell and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to talk to you about menopause. Now, in this clip, we're going to talk about the risk factors and what happens when a woman enters menopause, in terms of, what are they more prone to, increase the risk of getting. Now, I've written some risk factors and some particular conditions that a woman entering menopause would actually be faced with. Now, obviously smoking and alcohol is something that would increase the chance of a woman getting particular cancers when they enter menopause because of the decreased estrogen. Estrogen, like I said, is a natural hormone produced by the ovaries in the women and it has many protective mechanisms in the body. When that decreases in the woman, it's going to put her at risk for getting endometrial cancer, although, it also decreases her chance of getting breast cancer, so there are some positives and negatives with this particular condition. Now, also, some of the risk factors when you have decreased estrogen or when women enter into menopausal stage is the risk of getting osteoporosis because the decreased estrogen means that they're going to lose a lot more calcium from the bone, and so that's why we always recommend that women take a lot of multivitamins, calcium, and vitamin D. These are just some of the risk factors. In the next clip, I'm going to talk about the signs and symptoms that you will find when you're entering menopausal stage.
