"Special occasions are particularly difficult with a child that can't have gluten when my son has, instead of lockers they have what are called cubbies they're little boxes for their personal belongings, and I immediately have actually these snacks that are called Diego snacks and they are gluten free and they taste like candy and these are his favorites and I put these in his cubby and I tell the teacher if there is a special occasion that I just miss or I didn't bring anything special in I keep them there for him, and she has something immediately if it's a special eating time that she can pull these out. I don't give him these at home so that it is a special thing it's not just old hat, something that he's always had. I also try to ask them are you having a Valentine's day party today, are you having a St. Patrick's day, what are you doing for Easter, just trying to get an idea and I will make special cupcakes gluten-free or bring a lollipop or something so that when the other kids are eating their special treats he will have something as well. I never want him to sit there and not have something while the other kids are. So I'm basically just substituting and in essence it actually instead of making him seem like he is out of place it makes him special because he gets something different than the other kids so they don't look at it as a negative. The kids look at it as a positive which is, I don't want him to be ostracized for his special diet, so it works out very well."
