"With different kinds of sedation options available to the patient, we often times have recommendations for what a patient may require, in order for a particular procedure. For example, we find that with someone who just needs a basic cleaning or a routine feeling, they may feel they need a little bit of anxiety control but just a little bit. It's in those situations that we will typically recommend the nitric oxide or the laughing gas. With that you can get adequate control that a cleaning can be very comfortable as well as a basic feeling. However, when we get into more basic procedures such as deep cleanings or crowns or even bridges, something to that affect, we find that a lot of times the nitric oxide is not adequate alone. It is because of this that we will typically recommend oral sedation, taking some sort of oral medication, prior to the appointment, that way you can get a little more anxiety control, as well as pain control. Then, jumping up farther to that, once we get to the point where we have surgical intervention, so either you need gum surgery or you require something like a tooth extracted or you need wisdom teeth taken out, it's with this method that we typically recommend the IV sedation, again, because of the invasiveness, we find that the IV sedation is better for pain control and definitely produces the greatest amount of relaxation for the patient."
