"Hi! I'm Kristen Bryda here for Expert Village. I'm a dietetic intern at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and I'm here today to talk about the freshman 15. You may feel like you don't eat much but you're gaining weight. What should you do? Often you may not realize how many calories you are eating. By keeping track of what you are eating, you may find that you're snacking more than you think. If you're missing meals or cutting calories too much, this may decrease your metabolism. When you're metabolism slows down, your body tries to conserve energy by not burning as much calories throughout the day. To speed up your metabolism, try to eat small snacks or small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals. This will cause your body to continually digest and increase it has to burn to function. Also, try not to eat simple carbohydrates. Carbohydrates get digested very quickly. Other forms of food such as protein, fat, and fiber take longer to get digested so they stay in your stomach and help you stay satisfied longer. By eating small meals that contain things like protein and fiber, you won't feel hungry and buy impulse things such as junk food or candy. By increasing your metabolism, you can keep from gaining weight and you get to eat more, which will help you keep more satisfied."
