"Hi! I'm Jenny Cooper here for Expert Village. I'm a dietetic intern at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and I'm here to today to talk to you today about the freshman 15. What about alcohols and parties? I still want to have fun, so what can I drink? Well, alcohol is a major contributor to weight gain that contributes to the freshman 15. Alcohol provides 7 calories per gram, which is more than protein and carbohydrates. These are empty calories, which mean they provide no nutrients. These calories are stored as fat. If you go to a party and you are of age to drink, try alternating water with alcohol. This will help keep you hydrated and will reduce the amount of calories you would have consumed if you drank only alcohol. Try being the designated driver or the sober friend. This will keep you out of trouble and will reduce excess calories. If you are of age to drink and you choose to drink, avoid mixed drinks, which can be very high in calories and high in sugar. Try a light beer or wine instead, which are lower in calories than most mixed drinks."
