"Visually when there's a breakdown of the enamel or you can see it on the x-ray where at the end of the root there's basically swelling or disintegration of the bone because of the infection. Or in general you feel the pain or the swelling that is very, very visible. And so usually in those situations you have to go in there and do a root canal treatment. And treatment initially requires exposing these areas to drain the infection and to put some medicine in there and to allow it to heal. Or basically if it's not too bad we can go in there to drain it and clean it and seal the chamber so that bacteria can't go back in there again. In doing so that tooth that has the infection is now salvaged and you don't have to lose the tooth. If the tooth infection has continued to allow it to proceed then it's going to eat away the root, or eat away the tooth structure and in the end you will lose that tooth. But there's nothing to hold it anymore. There's no tooth structure remaining. And so one thing is you want to prevent, you want to avoid a root canal mainly because you don't want to go through that treatment. Two if you do have to go through that treatment you want it to be as soon as possible so you can preserve as much of the tooth structure. And mainly by preserving as much of the tooth structure then you can rebuild it, put a cap on it and that tooth will be back to normal again and to normal function."
