"A filling or a composite is a good choice. As far as strength and longevity, gold is still the standard. However, not too many people use it. Silver filling (amalgalm) is still popular. Most still use it. Not as many (it is dying off), because of the aesthetics. As far as the mechanical seal, you cannot argue about it. It is still one of the best. Composite -- the biggest problem is that we look at it as a microseal. It has gotten better. The issue is the pressure and strength. With a smaller filling, it isn't a problem. For a larger filling, it can become a problem. It is not a choice to use. That's why we use two things - amalgalm, composite -- depending on the size. Gold is great, but is very costly and most people just don't like the fact of having gold in the front of their teeth. It doesn't look as good as the others."
