"There are many different ways of doing fillings. Once the cavity is removed the different fillings that we use to fill that space where the cavity was. In the old days we used a gold foil to seal the area. Well gold is an excellent, excellent treatment. It's still the treatment of choice up to today. Except aesthetically not too many people like it. So if it's in the back it's acceptable. If it's in the front it's absolutely not acceptable. Before that then we had a silver filling which is called amalgam. Silver filling is a concoction of basically multiple different types of metal that's mixed together to create a hard, hard metal that basically is able to lock into any shape or form in the tooth and to seal up that area. It gives a good mechanical lock. And it's been around for over 150 years. And over the years the formula of the amalgam has changed to basically it's gotten safer and safer, so they say. It's still a good, good treatment but again the aesthetic portion is not the best because it's metal color. It's silver. And so if it's in the front it's not so pleasing. So now we come to the conclusion that we have to have a tooth colored filling. And one of the materials that is very, very popular is composite. Composite is basically very malleable. It's very doughy. And it comes in different colors. And a good dentist can mix the color correctly and match it to your natural tooth color so it looks natural. So if you have a cavity you still can take care of that cavity and seal that area with a composite filling as though that area had nothing done to it."
