The macrobiotic lifestyle is about more than just diet. Just as important as adhering to a dietary regimen is using the macrobiotic philosophy in our daily activities to add a feeling of freedom, happiness and artistry to our lives. The term Macrobiotics comes from the writings of Hippocrates, where he promoted the concept of a simple diet to promote health. The philosophy was formalized in Japan and brought to the US in the 1950s by George Ohsawa. While macrobiotics often incorporates Japanese foods, such as ginger, the philosophy emphasizes using locally grown grains & vegetables.

"On behalf of Expert Village my name is Gail Stolove with Holy Macro in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Today we're going to talk about a day in the life of the Macrobiotic lifestyle. I just want to mention at this point that I'm a cancer survivor, I'm a 12 year cancer survivor and when I tell people that, they look at me in disbelieve. They don't believe the way that I look and the amount of things that I do in the course of a day and the energy level that I have. They don't believe that I was ever sick, but 12 years ago I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer and I was given 6 to 12 months to live and that was what prompted me to get into Macrobiotics. But it's not what motivates many of the people that I work with. Many of them are doing it simply to prevent ever having such a health crisis in their life. Unfortunately I had to have the health crisis, but I do feel it's a big part of the reason that I'm here today, that I'm alive and well and have more energy than most people could ever dream of having."
