"What becomes a problem is that when we go without flossing, the bacteria that lingers in between teeth or underneath that gum tissue will start to create that irritation. And that irritation is very similar to having a cut on your hands and working in a garden where you have dirt that would enter that cut. Similar things happen with the gum tissue are that it becomes irritated. As it becomes irritated, the bacteria tends to make that gum tissue get puffy, red, swollen, and that can lead to eventual tooth loss if this continues for longer periods of time. You may notice that your dental office, your dental hygienist, as they're cleaning your teeth may mention that, oh, gee, I notice you're not flossing. It becomes very evident as we're cleaning teeth to see people who floss on a routine basis versus those who do not and the reason is simple. It's because if we're getting bleeding coming from that area, it's an indication that that person is not disturbing that bacteria that lingers and pools. And we'd like to think of it more as a turtle neck around a neck. The turtle neck can collect all the bacteria around the neck without being disturbed and that's what lingers and harbors in that area, causing this disease process."
