I'm Dr. Ed Weaver with Wilmington Optometry in Wilmington, North Carolina on behalf of Expert Village to tell you how to care for your contact lenses. The few things with contact lenses that you should not do are, and I'll go over a few of those, first of all you should not get contact lenses from anyone that is not an eye care professional. In other words you shouldn't go to a non-conventional supplier of contacts. For instance, you shouldn't get contacts without a prescription at a local store in your community. You shouldn't get them off the internet without a prescription because that means it has not been fitted for your eye properly and may not be appropriate for your eye. So you shouldn't do that. Second thing is you shouldn't share contact lenses with another person. That contact lens for the other person may not fit your eye properly. As I have mentioned the back surface of the contact lens fits properly in the front surface of you eye, and your lens may not fit properly for someone else. In addition to not fitting properly, you could get an eye infection by using somebody else's contact lens. The next thing that you shouldn't do is wear your contact lens longer than the prescribed time period. If the contact lens is two weeks recommended period, get rid of them in two weeks. If it's a month, get rid of them in a month, but never longer than that. The reason why is they're dirty, and after that period you are just more at risk for eye infections. Another reason, another risk factor in contact lenses is not cleaning your hands properly and handling contact lenses with dirty hands. That is probably the most common cause of eye infections. And the last thing is to try to avoid contact of your contact lenses with tap water, or any kind of fresh water that might be contaminated. Current studies show that that is one of the leading causes of problems now with soft contact lenses
