"I'm Dr. Edward Weaver with Wilmington Optometry in Wilmington, North Carolina on behalf of Expert Village to tell you how to care for you contact lenses. About 20 years ago disposable lenses were introduced. The purpose of disposable lens is to keep a clean lens on the eye all the time essentially. Before that time, soft lenses were available but they were non-disposable and most wearers tried to get from 9 months to a year out of those contacts. The problem with that is that they're difficult to keep clean. Disposable lenses have eliminated that problem because these lenses are disposed of either in a one-day, a two week, or one-month fashion. Essentially, the person's wearing a clean lens all the time, so there's less to do, there's less to clean and disinfect, and enzyme treatments that were required in the past is a lot less to do with disposable lenses now than in the past because disposable lenses are easier to care for. The whole idea behind the disposable period, whether it be one day or two weeks or one month is to get ride of that lens before it gets dirty. What you don't want to do is wear a dirty lens."
