"But when you whiten your teeth it's important that you do have a dentist to kind of watch over it because remember one thing, once the enamel is damaged, it's damaged. And when you want to have something a quick, quick whitening process. You have to be careful because in order for the whitening to occur very fast they have to increase the concentration of the solution. And if they do so that means they're going to really eat away the sound tooth structure that you have. And for that tooth structure to recover sometimes will take a while or sometimes it might not at all. So you have to be careful. So for whitening our teeth the main thing is to basically work on the enamel. Now are all patients candidates for whitening? Again it's no. If you have gingivitis, gum disease, recession of the gum, meaning that if the area of the roots is exposed, the inner part of the tooth is exposed. You better be careful because it will become very sensitive. If you get that whitening gel onto the roots or onto the gum it will burn that area and if it does so, you will become very, very sensitive. And I know a lot of cases where they used the whitening product and they left it on their teeth for too long of a period and they end up with a root canal because the nerve can not handle that traumatic experience. And the gum being burned it recedes more. The tooth structure, the root structure being exposed to it, it gets eroded away. So it can become very damaging if it's not controlled. That's why you're strongly urged that if you do the teeth whitening that you do do it with a dentist or someone that can watch over how your tooth structure is doing and if your teeth are whitening correctly."
