"Hi. I'm Dr. Michael Walker from Hill Country Plastic Surgery Center and I'm here today on behalf of Expert Village to talk to you about rhinoplasties or nose jobs. What is a Deviated Septum? Well a septum is the divider between the right and the left chambers of the nose inside. It's made from cartilage and bone. It is frequently traumatized which causes it to grow crookedly or it may even fracture from a car wreck or maybe from a fall on the playground when you were a child or even from trauma coming down the birth canal being born. All of these things can cause the septum to grow crookedly. It can have an effect on the breathing in one chamber of the nose. When it does cause nasal obstruction it is an indication to have it fixed because it will help with your breathing. When septums are very deviated sometimes the external part of the nose will follow the septum and deviate to one side or the other. In cases like that a patient will need a combined surgery of a rhinoplasty to fix the external part and a septoplasty to fix the internal part to get it perfectly straight."
