"Hello! Welcome! We are raw food doctors Rick and Karin Dina. We specialize in teaching the benefits of whole natural plant food nutrition from a raw food perspective. We're here today to talk to you about what is a Vegan diet. Where do you get your protein? In my twenty plus years as a Vegan if I had a dollar for every time I ever heard that question, I'd probably be a millionaire by now. Most of what we think about protein is based on studies done in the early nineteen hundreds on rats. Where they found that when rats were given milk protein, they grew normally. When rats were given wheat protein, they grew slowly. And when rats were given only corn protein, they didn't grow and they lost weight. Based on this they classified animal protein is complete protein and vegetable and plant based proteins as incomplete proteins. We've learned a lot since nineteen fourteen when these studies started coming out. Subsequent studies have shown that rats have ten essential Amino acids. There are twenty total Amino acids. Ten of them are essential for rats. As it turns out only eight are essential for human beings. Humans mothers' milk contains five percent of it's calories from protein. And there's no time in life when you need more protein. Where as rats even on complete protein for them didn't grow optimally on nine percent protein. They needed eighteen percent protein. So to do studies on rats and extrapolate that over to human beings, doesn't work. The bottom line for Vegans, if you're getting enough calories from any variety of whole, natural foods, you are getting enough protein."
