Hi my name is Dr. Steve Minors of Rehab Effects in Austin, Texas and today we will be performing a chiropractic adjustment on an eight and a half year old. We will be doing it on his low back or his lumbar spine. So we have the patient and we put him on his lower side and I assume the following position before I adjust him. I have to make sure he is comfortable. I put my hand right here and there is a slight impulse like that. The pediatric adjustment that we just showed you, the lumbar spine, is going to be described in further detail right now using the lumbar spine. What we have here is a model of the lumbar spine. The lumbar spine usually has five bones to it with discus in between them, right there, with something called the sacrum and this is the tailbone. We have various nerves that come out of each side going down into the buttocks and into the legs. Here we have the pointy little what we call spinous processes that you can feel on your back. In children including the eight and a half year old that I just adjusted, his bone structure is not as well developed as this so therefore, you have to take great care and make sure that the doctor who is performing the manipulation has great experience in doing this, performing the manipulation. When we are performing the manipulation actually what we are doing is relieving some of the rotations and abnormal biomechanics that are in the spine that are causing irritation to the nervous system. When we had him on his side adjusting him we were relieving the tension as well as the tension on the nervous system. When that happens you the can improve the immune function, better biomechanics, better sports performance, and a whole host of other conditions that may be related to this.
