Hi my name is Dr. Steve Minors of Rehab Effects here in Austin, Texas and today we are going to be talking about electrotherapy which is a modality that we use here. Electrotherapy is the process by which you apply electrical paths that look similar to this, two, possibly four depending on the type of electrotherapy that you are performing. You are performing electrotherapy for a patient who may have pain, swelling, bruising, or you may have a group of weak muscles that need to be strengthened especially for the athlete or they are recovering from surgery, they have gotten through but the muscles need to be strengthened. You can use electrotherapy to help achieve that. There are various types of electrotherapy just by looking at the screen here just to mention a few: Interferential, high volt galvanic, premodulated stem, microcurrent, Russian stem, symmetrical biphasic. Depending on the patient's complaint and how they present, that will determine what modality will be best for them. So for someone who has let's say the sprained ankle, you can use high volt galvanic. The patient who comes in with intractable low back pain, interferential may be indicated. For the patient who is post surgical and has the weak muscles and they need to be strengthened, Russian stem is indicated.
