How to Treat a Runny Nose

"Hello. My name is Dr. Susan Jewell, and on behalf of Expert Village, I want to talk to you about colds and flu. And I wanted to talk to you about also ways to alleviate symptoms of colds and flu. Now in this clip, I want to talk to you about one of the symptoms that we always, frequently have when we have colds and flu and that is "runny nose" and "dripping nose." So, "nasal drip" is what we call it in medical terms. Now, there are a lot of products out there that will help you with a runny nose and that's antihistamine. So, you can buy over-the-counter antihistamine tablets that will help you stop the drainage and all this constant runny nose, blowing and sneezing. So, Contac is pretty good; it has antihistamine in it that will help with that symptom. And also, tissue of course. Tissues are good to help with a runny nose. But, one of the things to stop the spread of colds and flu is to stop the airalizing of the bacteria and the virus in the air where other people can then contract the colds and flus. So, I recommend that when you do the sneezing, (this is important to teach the children and most adults too)...when you sneeze, you actually get the tissue and sneeze into the tissue instead of like, sneezing out into the open air where you are going to spread all the germs and bacteria to other people. And, if you don't have tissues around, I know another way is just to sneeze into the palms of your hands, so that you can at least contain the germs into the hand. Then, of course, you've got to go wash your hands with soap and water to cleanse your hands. So, these are some of the ways to address the runny nose symptoms of colds and flus. "
