"Hello, my name is Dr. Susan Jewell and on behalf of Expert Village today I'm going to talk to you about cholesterol and in particular ways to lower your cholesterol intake because cholesterol is specifically the bad form of cholesterol the LDL is the major contributing factor to a lot of cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart attacks. Now in this clip we are going to talk about the really mundane but really healthy vegetable the onion. Now here I have half a piece of onion that's cut up and this is the yellow type of onion. You can get several different varieties of onion. The red type as well and onion has many, many good properties to help your cholesterol, fight your cholesterol level. Now here I've written down several properties of onions. Now onions possess a compound called quercetin. Quercetin is a very powerful antioxidant and what it does is it prevents LDL to deposit in the arteries and also onions contain a sulphur compounds which will help to increase the good cholesterol the HDL. Now in specifically red and yellow onion which I've shown here. This is the yellow one but the red one has the red skin. The really, really red purply skin. They contain a very powerful anitoxidant called flavonoids. So the more onions that you eat and preferably if you eat onions raw if you can bear the very pungent smell and the odor then you are going to actually ingest a high level of the good properties of the quercetin and the flavonoids. And that would help you to at least decrease the level of LDL intake into your body. So onions is actually a wonderful vegetable you should increase that in your diet."
